What next after the IOSH Managing Safely certificate? by ATC Risk Management Ltd
The IOSH Managing Safely course is typically run over four days (although some providers may stretch it over five), and aims to give managers and supervisors in any industry the knowledge to help them manage health and safety in their workplace. The course is accredited by IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) and because of this can only be delivered by a provider that has been pre-approved by IOSH. Delegates who successfully complete the short written assessment and workplace-based project are awarded the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate.
The course gives managers and supervisors an accredited certificate from a health and safety body known and respected all over the world. But for those who wish to further their knowledge, or wish to one day pursue a career in the industry, a NEBOSH Certificate qualification is usually the next step.
NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) are also known and respected throughout the world as one of the leading health and safety bodies, with approximately 30,000 people enrolling on a NEBOSH course annually.
The NEBOSH General Certificate is the most popular NEBOSH Certificate course. Usually delivered over 12 days, it provides a comprehensive level of detail on a varied range of topics, covering the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. For those not based in the UK and therefore not affected by UK legislation, there is a NEBOSH International General Certificate.
There are also NEBOSH Fire Safety and NEBOSH Construction Certificate qualifications, which focus on the requirements and risks of fire and construction sites respectively. Some delegates go on to do one or the other after passing the NEBOSH General Certificate, specialising their knowledge in either fire or construction safety, whereas some simply go straight into the Fire or Construction Certificate without doing the General. The first week of the Fire and Construction courses (Unit NGC1) is also the same as the first week of the NEBOSH General Certificate, and does not need to be repeated if you have already taken it by doing the General Certificate, provided you have passed this unit within five years. Some training providers may insist on you doing the full Fire or Construction course, forcing you to have to sit through and repeat this unit again, whilst others offer ‘Conversion Courses’ which do not include this unit and allow you to obtain the Fire or Construction Certificate without having to repeat this unit again if you have already passed it within 5 years, saving you both time and money.
After that, for those who wish to obtain an even higher qualification, there is either the NEBOSH Diploma, or an NVQ Diploma Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. Due to the many hours that need to be devoted in order to achieve the qualification, they are therefore only really suitable for those who have a serious interest in the subject, and the dedication to achieve the level needed to pass.
