NVQ Training: How Vocational Training Can Boost Your Business Performance   by Charlotte Liversidge

What is NVQ Training?

NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification – one of the best-known work-based qualifications in the UK. An NVQ is a qualification which is assessed and awarded in the workplace rather than by attending a college, and there are a wide range of qualifications on offer relevant to virtually every job and profession.

NVQ qualifications are available at a variety of levels, from introductory courses for complete beginners right the way up to degree and postgraduate level courses for experienced senior managers. Since the courses are work-based, the tuition is very flexible, allowing the course to be tailored to match the student’s job role closely and ensuring that the skills students learn are going to help them in the day-to-day completion of their work.

For employers, NVQ’s are a popular way to increase staff knowledge and skills, boosting the performance of the business while helping employees to gain nationally recognised qualifications at the same time.

How does NVQ Training Work?

Unlike traditional qualifications like GCSE’s and A Levels, an NVQ doesn’t focus on academic knowledge or use traditional assessment methods like essays and exams. Instead, these qualifications are vocational, which means they are designed to measure how well a candidate can actually do a job, rather than their knowledge of academic topics.

To pass an NVQ, students must meet certain ‘outcomes’ – these are tasks that the student would be expected to be able to perform to prove they’ve achieved the necessary level to gain the qualification. To prove this, students build a portfolio of evidence from their day-to-day work – this can include reports, completed work, observations, written statements or any other documentation which demonstrates that they’re achieving the right standard in their job. Once all of the outcomes have been met and evidence has been provided, the portfolio is sent to an assessor, who will examine it and award the qualification providing the necessary evidence has been included.

Throughout an NVQ course, students will have contact with an NVQ assessor who will make sure that they are collecting the right evidence for their portfolios. The assessor will also help with other assessment methods such as observations or interviews where these are necessary. For businesses, this is a very convenient way of assessing students, as it can take place in the workplace rather than having the employee take time off work. The assessments and visits are very flexible, and can fit around business needs to make sure that any disruption is minimal, and since all the assessment is based around the employee’s actual job employers can be sure that their staff are learning relevant, useful skills which will benefit the business.

How Can NVQ Training Help My Business?

Using NVQ’s to train your staff is a great way to improve the performance of your business. Because the courses are so closely tailored to the employee’s individual job role, they can increase the employee’s productivity and efficiency as well as reducing accidents and improving working practices. All of these things help to reduce running costs and waste, increasing profit margins.

Investing in staff training of any kind also has huge benefits for businesses in terms of staff morale. Staff training improves motivation and confidence, and while many employers worry that staff will leave after receiving training the opposite is true – studies have shown that companies who provide training have higher staff retention levels than those who don’t. Being seen to take an interest in the wellbeing of your staff and to be serious about developing your workforce can have a positive effect on a company’s reputation, making recruiting high calibre employees easier and showing that your business is committed to excellence in its industry.
