Becoming a Nail Technician – Qualifications Needed   by Una Pecatti

In order to become a professional nail technician you will need to gain some form of qualifications. As the industry has grown it was decided that in order to protect the public and to give them the best possible treatments, certain guidelines should be followed.

Various standards and guidelines were created by nail technicians and other professionals within the beauty industry. They aimed to give anybody wanting to train to be a nail technician the basic knowledge and understanding of safe practice and of the various treatments currently available. They are constantly being updated as the industry grows and as they change so too do the qualifications that you gain.

The Qualifications Available

When you are looking at the qualifications available for nail technicians you will notice that there are a few options available. You can gain qualifications from independent bodies that are not as widely recognized as more accredited companies. As long as the course teaches you basic knowledge and you gain some practical training, usually that will be enough for most beauty salons.

However, if you are worried about the reputation of a certain company it would be better to stick to a well known qualification such as the NVQ.

NVQs come in three different levels with a fourth one currently in progress. Starting from level one you work your way up the different levels to get to where you want to be in the nail industry.

If you are just finishing college or if you are changing your career and you have no clue about nails then it would be better to start with level one. This will give you the very basic knowledge needed to understand the business. You will only be trained to an assistant level but it is the best start for school leavers.

Once you have gained your level one NVQ you can then train for your level two qualification. This will allow you to work unsupervised and it is the most common level that people reach within the industry. You will learn all you need to know about customer service, treatments such as pedicures and artificial nails and you will gain a better understanding about various health and safety issues.

If you are looking to have more responsibility then an NVQ level three should be what you aim for. You will learn more about advanced techniques, better customer service skills and you will also learn more about nail art and artificial nails. It will enable you to work within a supervisory role and it is currently the highest level available. Once the level four NVQ has been introduced you will be able to train to a managerial level.

Overall NVQs are the most popular types of qualifications within the UK. Usually you will earn your level one qualification before you join a company. However it is possible to be taken on by a beauty salon in the promise that you will complete your NVQ level one as soon as possible. It is always a good idea to go into further training and education even when you are a qualified nail technician. This is because the business is always expanding and new treatments are constantly being introduced.
